Brother of the Duke of Wellington, Richard Colley Wellesley played a vital role in the consolidation of British rule in India during the Regency. In 1793 he became a commissioner of the Board of Control for India, and in 1797 was appointed Governor-General.
An Anglo-Irish politician and controversial figure of his time, Richard, Marquess of Wellesley, gained recognition for his leading role in the expansion of the British dominions in Asia, the defeat of Tipu Sultan in May 1799, and the unification of a large part of the Indian territories.
