Finally, on October 11, 1859, Samuel Kirkwood defeated his Democratic opponent by a respectable margin of 3,170 votes. Sworn into office on January 11, 1860, Samuel Kirkwood won his place in Iowa history by his decisive actions as the state’s Civil War governor.
Samuel Jordan Kirkwood returned to Iowa, launched an unsuccessful campaign to become a United States Representative in 1886, and died in 1894.
