From 1992 to 1995, he was a member of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Tribunal and the Garda Síochána Complaints Appeal Board, and in 1997 he became a Senior Counsel. Lenihan married Circuit Court judge Patricia Ryan in 1997; and they had two children. In December 2009, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
