In 1786, Cornwallis was appointed as governor-general and commander-in-chief of India. He remained there until 1793. Cornwallis reformed the administration in an attempt to stamp out corruption. Between 1791 and 1792 he was predominantly engaged in fighting against Tipu Sultan, ruler of Mysore.
Cornwallis was exchanged for Henry Laurens in May 1782. Several years later, in 1786, he accepted the position of the first Governor-General of India, was elevated to 1st Marquess Cornwallis in 1793, and then in 1797 appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.
