23. März 2009 · Dirk U. Stikker was a Dutch politician and diplomat who served as NATO Secretary General and Chairman of the North Atlantic Council from 1961 to 1964. He was also a founder of the Party for Freedom and Democracy, a Minister of Foreign Affairs, a Political Mediator of the OEEC, and an Ambassador to the UK and Iceland.
Dirk Uipko Stikker became the third Secretary General on 21 April 1961. His name in connection with NATO was already a familiar one. As Foreign Minister of the Netherlands, Stikker signed the North Atlantic Treaty in 1949.
