David Canabarro. (1796-1876) was initially neutral in the Ragamuffin War. He later enlisted as a lieutenant, but quickly rose through the ranks, and took command in 1843, when Bento Gonçalves quit the command to avoid a split among Republicans and went on to serve under the orders of Canabarro.
