On 31 May 1916, Chester was sent to investigate distant gun flashes amid a bank of mist. A hail of heavy shells fell all around Chester, hitting the ship seventeen times. All the gun crew were killed or badly wounded, apart from Boy (1st Class) John Travers (Jack) Cornwell.
