Cacciaguida degli Elisei (c. 1098 – c. 1148) was an Italian crusader and the great-great-grandfather of Dante Alighieri. Little is known about his life. He was born in Florence , and two documents from 1189 and 1201 mention his existence.
Dante meets his ancestor Cacciaguida in the heaven of Mars, where he learns about his family lineage and his role in the future. Cacciaguida is a poet and a warrior, and he gives Dante advice on how to face the challenges ahead.
Cacciaguida is known to have served as a knight in the Second Crusade, dying about the middle of the 12th century. Though he values the simple joys of earthly life, they pale next to the heavenly glories to which his martyr’s death granted him entrance.
