1. Feb. 2019 · The ferry was the brainchild of Richard Callaway. Callaway, who lived in Bedford County, Virginia, joined Daniel Boone’s party of “road cutters” who blazed the trail into Kentucky in 1775.
On November 8, 1780, Colonel Richard Callaway was ambushed about a mile outside of Boonesborough by a Shawnee war party. He was killed and scalped, and his body was mutilated. Calloway County, Kentucky, was named after Callaway.
After the siege, Colonel Richard Callaway brought charges against Boone, alleging that Boone "was in favour of the British government."
