Archibald was the bastard son of Sir James "the Black" Douglas, Robert I 's trusted lieutenant, and an unknown mother.

Warden of West Marshes 1364. He was bestowed much of Galloway by King David II of Scotland in 1369 and became Lord of Galloway.
