Maria war Infantin aus Portugal und von Geburt an Mitglied des Hauses Braganza . Bis zur Geburt ihres Bruders Michele , Herzog von Braganza , trug Maria den Titel der königlichen Prinzessin von Portugal, ein fiktiver Titel, den ihr ihr 1834 abgesetzter Vater verliehen hatte.
