Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier was born in 1811 at Saint-Lô, France. At the age of 26, he was appointed a teacher of astronomy at the Ecole Polytechnic Paris. Immediately after his appointment he began an intensive study of the motion of Mercury.

Er arbeitete einen Großteil seines Lebens am Observatoire de Paris, dessen Direktor er war, und war neben John Couch Adams der Entdecker des Planeten Neptun.
Le Verrier discovered the planet Neptune by calculating its position and mass from the orbit of Uranus. He also studied the motion of Mercury and the perihelion advance, and was director of the Paris Observatory.
