Der französische Mathematiker Georges-Louis Leclerc Buffon sorgte für großen Wirbel in der Wissenschaftswelt des 18. Jahrhunderts. Durch seine Erkenntnisse zur Naturgeschichte zog er den Zorn der Kirche auf sich. Ganz nebenbei lieferte er elementare Beiträge zur Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie.
Bekannt ist BUFFON in der Mathematik vor allem wegen eines 1733 vor der Pariser Akademie vorgetragenen und nach ihm benannten Experiments auf dem Gebiet der Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung (buffonsches Nadelproblem).
