is a 1980 novel written by Thomas Meehan. It is a novelization of the 1977 stage musical Annie. The novel is based on an earlier pre-Broadway version of the script. Because of this, it contains numerous differences from the final version.
•The novel follows an earlier concept for the play where the story took place over a greater span of time. The story takes place over an entire year instead of just the two weeks portrayed in the final version of the play. Annie's initial escape attempt from the orphanage take place on New Year's Day of 1933, rather than in December, and her actual escape takes place two days later, rather than on the same day. She remains on the run for almost an entire year, where she is forced into child labor by a couple at a beanery for a few months, before fleeing after the couple threaten to send Sandy to the pound. She spends the remainder of the year at the Hooverville, where she helps sell apples, before she's caught and brought back to the orphanage.
•Because the original version of the play had a less compressed timeline, all of the characters are a year older at the end of the novel than they were at the start (Annie ages from 11 to 12, Molly ages from 6 to 7, etc). Because of this, the characters were each born a year older than they were in the final version of the play (for instance, Annie was born in 1921 instead of 1922).
•All of the songs are removed and replaced with regular dialogue.
•There are seventeen orphans other than Annie (though only the six that made it into the final version of the play are named).
•An extended flashback sequence details an event where Annie won the school spelling bee but was refused the prize, which she views as one of her most painful memories.
•Annie doesn't fall asleep during the walk to the Roxy, and her, Grace, and Warbucks watch Little Women.
