James Edward Hervey MacDonald RCA (1873–1932) was an English-Canadian artist, best known as a member of the Group of Seven who asserted a distinct national identity combined with a common heritage stemming from early modernism in Europe in the early twentieth century.

One of Canada's leading graphic designers and a popular art teacher, MacDonald was also a poet and calligrapher. His design work was strongly influenced by Arts and Crafts designers in England and Canada, especially William Morris.
J.E.H. MacDonald was a Canadian artist and one of the founders of the Group of Seven who initiated the first major Canadian national art movement. He responded to the Canadian landscape with a sensitivity honed by his interest in the American writers Henry David Thoreau and Walt Whitman.
J.E.H. MacDonald. The Tangled Garden. 1916. Category: Later Canadian Art. Along with Lawren Harris, MacDonald was a key initiator of the Group of Seven and one of its most outspoken members. This painting raised controversy when it was first exhibited in 1916. The artist was targeted for using such a large canvas for his relatively mundane subject.
