Robert Ker Porter was born in Durham. He entered the Royal Academy Schools at 13. In 1793 he was commissioned to paint an altarpiece for Shoreditch church, followed by further biblical works.
Sir Robert Ker Porter (1777-1842) made his name with vast panoramas of topical battles exhibited at the Lyceum in London. The Storming of Seringapatam was a semi-circular painting measuring no less than 120 feet across. He was also commissioned by the British Government as a propaganda artist.

In 1799 he became a founder member of 'The Brothers', a group of artists who espoused history painting. He married a Russian princess and toured the Middle East between 1815 and 1819.
