He was a poet of distinct merit, as his Poems by a Painter (1861) and Spindrift (1867) pleasantly exemplified. He was also well known as an antiquary, his hobby, indeed, being the collection of arms and armour. Sir Noel died in Edinburgh on the 26th of December 1901.

Sir Joseph Noél Paton, R.S.A., was born in Dunfermline in 1821, and learnt the rudiments of Art from his father, who had studied as an Artist, and was by profession a designer of patterns for damask.
Sir Joseph Noel Paton was renowned for his Shakespearean fairy scenes. His meticulous and descriptive style was ideally suited to the narrative subjects in which he specialised.
