Februar 1853 im Alter von nur 36 Jahren in Rom starb, ging er als einer der neuromantischen Maler Schwedens in die Kunstgeschichte ein, da er zu den wenigen Künstlern jener Zeit gehörte, die bedeutend von der nordischen Sagenwelt beeinflusst waren und er auch den Pflanzen eine eigene Seele zusprach.
