Paul-Albert Besnard (2 June 1849 – 4 December 1934) was a French painter and printmaker. He was born in Paris and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, studied with Jean Bremond and was influenced by Alexandre Cabanel. He won the Prix de Rome in 1874 with the painting Death of Timophanes.

Albert Besnard, né le 2 juin 1849 à Paris, où il est mort le 4 décembre 1934, est un peintre et graveur français . Biographie. Ses parents sont Louis Adolphe Besnard, peintre d'histoire élève d' Ingres, et Louise Pauline Vaillant, miniaturiste réputée, élève de Lizinska de Mirbel .
Famous for his grand decoration work (École de Pharmacie, Hôtel de Ville, the Chemistry amphitheatre of the Sorbonne, the dome of the Petit Palais, the ceiling of la Comédie Française etc.), Besnard dazzled his contemporaries with his “dazzling enchantment".
Paul-Albert Besnard (1849-1934) was a student of the academic painter Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889), won the prix de Rome in 1874 and was among the founders of the Société Nationale in 1890. Throughout his career his style remained in between academic and impressionistic.
