Marcian “Ted” Hoff is best known as the architect of the first microprocessor — the Intel 4004. Released in November 1971, the 4004 sparked the microprocessor revolution that came to define Silicon Valley.
1. Feb. 1994 · Ted Hoff is part of electronics industry legend. While a research manager at Intel Corp., then based in Mountain View, he realized that silicon technology had advanced to the point that, with careful engineering, a complete central processor could fit on a chip.
Marcian “Ted” Hoff (PhD '62 EE), is best known as the architect of the first microprocessor. Intel’s 4004 was released in November 1971, 35 years ago this month. The history that his ingenuity helped spawn is now the subject of a new DVD, the Microprocessor Chronicles.
26. Juni 2024 · Hoff was most recently chief technologist at Teklicon, an intellectual property consulting firm, at which he served from 1990 to 2007. Hoff shares the US National Medal of Technology (2009) with Faggin and Mazor and the Kyoto Prize (1997) with Faggin, Mazor, and Shima.
Together, four engineers (Dr. Faggin, Dr. Hoff, Mr. Mazor and Dr. Shima) developed the world’s first microprocessor, the 4004. The four pioneers demonstrated that by integrating a few semiconductor chips, a microcomputer could be created which could perform a wide variety of functions.
