Am 23. März 1783 hatte der kränkliche Prinz Charles Edward Charlotte legitimiert, sie zur „Duchess of Albany“ im jakobitischen Adel ernannt und zur Erbin eines Teils seines Privatbesitzes gemacht, jedoch nicht seines Anspruchs auf den Thron.
