The North Slob is an area of mud-flats at the estuary of the River Slaney at Wexford Harbour, Ireland. The North Slob is an area of 10 km 2 (2,500 acres) that was reclaimed in the mid-19th century by the building of a sea wall. It is the lowest geographical point on the island of Ireland.

The North Slob in Wexford was created in the middle of the 1800s by the building of a sea wall on the northern side of Wexford Harbour. Roughly 1,000 hectares of mudflats were reclaimed and this area was then turned into agricultural land similar to the Dutch polders. However, it is the remaining 200 hectares of the North Slob that interest us.

In earlier times, the area occupied by the harbour was considerably larger than it is today, up to ten miles (16 km) wide at its widest point, with large mud flats on both sides. These were known as the North Slob and the South Slob from the Irish word slab, meaning mud. [1]
The North Slob (from the Irish slab, meaning 'mud' or 'mire') is a large area of reclaimed land to the north of Wexford harbour, drained by ditches and protected by Dutch-style dykes. It's prime birdwatching territory – home to 35% of the world's population of Greenland white-fronted geese each winter, some 10,000 in total.
