Alan, who died in Tameside Hospital on February 24, was a former journalist on the Ashton Reporter Group who switched to production as a compositor at the Daily Express and worked latterly in security at Manchester Airport.

Al was born on July 9, 1953 in Appleton, Wisconsin, to John and Alice (Lewin) Barten. Al graduated from Appleton West High School (“West is best”) in 1971 and worked as a Lineman with WE Energies for 38 years before retiring.
