Die Geschichte von Pilot begann 1970, als sich David Paton und Billy Lyall als Mitglieder der frühen Bay City Rollers kennenlernten. Das Zusammenspiel bei den Rollers war aber nur von kurzer Dauer. Schon im Oktober 1970 verließ Paton die Rollers, ein Jahr später schied auch Billy Lyall aus.
Die Gruppe PILOT wurde Anfang des Jahres 1977 in Magdeburg gegründet.
