Major-General Sir John Swinton of Kimmerghame, KCVO, OBE, DL (21 April 1925 – 4 October 2018) was a British Army officer who served as Major-General commanding the Household Division and General Officer Commanding London District from 1976 until his retirement in 1979.
Old Kimmerghame house and estate was purchased in 1770 by Captain Archibald Swinton of Manderston, who later sold it in 1803. However his son John Swinton acquired Kimmerghame in 1850 from his aunt Mary Campbell of Blythswood. This older house was demolished and rebuilt in the early 1850s.

Major General Sir John Swinton died peacefully at his home, Kimmerghame, Berwickshire, on 4th October 2018, aged 93. His immediate forebears had lived there for several generations, but before that the Swintons had been a significant presence in the Borders for centuries.
