Avantgarde-Jazz ist ein Begriff, der von Musikern geprägt wurde und musikwissenschaftlich nicht definitorisch unterlegt ist. Teilweise wird darunter Free Jazz mit regelmäßigem Rhythmus und regelmäßigem Tempo verstanden, wobei andere musikalische Bestandteile wie Melodie und Akkorde relativ frei sind.
