Avec 63 702 habitants en 2021, il s'agit de la commune la plus peuplée du département et la troisième commune la plus peuplée de la région Centre-Val de Loire, après Tours et Orléans, et devant Blois, Châteauroux et Chartres.

Aug. 2017 · Nahe der Mitte Frankreichs liegt die Stadt Bourges, Hauptstadt des Departements Cher – trotz langer Geschichte und zahlreicher Sehenswürdigkeiten von Touristen aus Deutschland bisher nur wenig wahrgenommen. Südlich von Paris liegt 2 Stunden Zugfahrt entfernt und nahe an der Mitte Frankreichs die Kleinstadt Bourges (ca. 66.000 Einwohner).
In 1487, Bourges is a " large " town with at least 15 000 in habitants despite outbreaks of plague and paucity. Louis XI gives it a University and two fairs a year. Merchants' shops line the streets near the old wall. Craftsmen group together in the lower part of the town.
