Die gebirgige Region liegt zwischen Karakorum und Himalaya und bildet administrativ eine der drei Agencies des Sonderterritoriums unter Bundesverwaltung Gilgit-Baltistan, das früher als Nordgebiete (Northern Areas) bezeichnet wurde. Gilgit (/ ˈ ɡ ɪ l ɡ ɪ t /; Shina: گلیٗت; Urdu: گلگت IPA: [ˈɡɪlɡɪt]) is a city in Pakistani-administered Gilgit–Baltistan in the disputed Kashmir region. It is the capital of the Gilgit-Baltistan region. The city is located in a broad valley near the confluence of the Gilgit and the Hunza rivers.
Gilgit Baltistan, which was most recently known as the Northern Areas, presently consists of ten districts, has a population approaching two million, has an area of approximately 28,000 square miles (73,000 km 2), and shares borders with China, Afghanistan, and India.
