Worldwide Cost of Living 2021: explore the rise and fall of living costs in 173 cities. Worldwide Cost of Living explores the cost of living in 173 cities, measured against impactful global events. On average, prices for goods and services have risen by 3.5% year-on-year, the highest inflation rate seen in the last five years.

The Worldwide Cost of Living Survey compares more than 400 individual prices across 160 products and services in cities around the world. This data is used to produce our annual Worldwide Cost of Living Report which provides a ranking of the world’s major cities.
Price rises are slowing, but not enough. Key findings. • EIU’s latest Worldwide Cost of Living (WCOL) survey, conducted between August 14th and September 11th 2023, shows that prices rose by an average of 7.4% in local-currency terms over the past year in the world’s major cities.

A cost-of-living index is calculated from the price data to express the difference in the cost of living between any two cities. Companies can then apply this index to an executive's spendable income to reach a fair cost of living allowance.
