History. Arts High School opened its doors to students in September 1931 as the first public high school in the United States specializing in the visual and performing arts. By the mid-1970s, Arts High School faced challenges from budget cuts affecting public schools in general, and those of the older cities in particular.
We understand the history of humanity through art. From prehistoric depictions of woolly mammoths to contemporary abstraction, artists have addressed their time and place in history and have expressed universal human truths for tens of thousands of years.

Central Visual and Performing Arts High School (formerly Central High School) is a magnet high school in St. Louis, Missouri, part of the St. Louis Public Schools. Founded in 1853, Central High School is the oldest public high school west of the Mississippi River, although it has moved several times and merged with a magnet school in 1984.
