Emerging in the early 1970s, the festival became a fixture in the 1980s and established itself as a litmus test of British artistic and cultural relevance, highlighting the biggest names in music alongside up-and-coming acts.
Auf dem Gelände liegt auch ein Megalith-Kreis, allerdings wurde dieser extra für das Festival errichtet, hat also keinen historischen Ursprung. Das erste Festival auf der Worthy Farm des Milchbauern Michael Eavis in der Nähe des Dorfs Pilton fand am 19. September 1970 als Pilton Pop, Blues & Folk Festival statt.
