23. Feb. 2004 · Kant's Moral Philosophy. Immanuel Kant (1724–1804) argued that moral requirements are based on a standard of rationality he dubbed the “Categorical Imperative” (CI). Immorality thus involves a violation of the CI and is thereby irrational.
There are numerous examples. Eva-Maria Engelen, for instance, in her book Gefühle (2007: 35) claims that acts “which are meant to result from rational considerations cannot be realized without the motivating and evaluative power of emotions”.
Kant lays out the case for his moral theory in Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals (1785), Critique of Practical Reason (also known as the “Second Critique”; 1788), and the Metaphysics of Morals (1797).
