Lan Xang war ein Königreich auf dem Gebiet des heutigen Laos und Nordostthailands. Lan Xang wurde 1354 von Fa Ngum gegründet. Fa Ngum was the founder and first king of the Lao kingdom of Lan Xang who created the first unified state of the Lao people. Fa Ngum was the grandson of Souvanna Khamphong, the last in a long line of local rulers of the principality of Muang Swa, later called Luang Prabang, on the upper Mekong.

Lan Xang ([lâːn sâːŋ]) or Lancang was a Lao kingdom that held the area of present-day Laos from 1353 to 1707. For three and a half centuries, Lan Xang was one of the largest kingdoms in Southeast Asia. The kingdom is the basis for Laos's national historic and cultural identity.
