3. Apr. 2021 · Mahalia Jackson's two marriages were rather short-lived and resulted in no children. Her first marriage was in 1935 to Isaac "Ike" Hockenhull, a chemist who impressed Mahalia with his manners and the attention he showered on her.
Mahalia Jackson was born to Charity Clark and Johnny Jackson, a stevedore and weekend barber. Clark and Jackson were unmarried, a common arrangement among black women in New Orleans at the time. He lived elsewhere, never joining Charity as a parent.
Mahalia got married in 1936 but the marriage ended in divorce after few years as her husband was an addicted gambler and he also forced her to sing various secular music compositions. After living an active life, Mahalia died in Chicago on 27th of January in 1972.
