Pied Piper of Lovers, published in 1935, is Lawrence Durrell's first novel. The novel is in large part autobiographical and focuses on the protagonist's childhood in India and maturation in London. It is followed by Panic Spring, which partly continues the actions of its characters.

Im gleichen Jahr veröffentlichte er seinen ersten Roman Pied Piper of Lovers. 1941 mussten die Durrells Griechenland wegen der näherrückenden deutschen Armee verlassen. Durrell zog nach Kairo. In der Folge lebte Durrell in Alexandria, nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges auf Rhodos, 1947/48 in Argentinien, 1949 bis 1952 in Belgrad.

Most are still in print, but until this year, his first two novels, Pied Piper of Lovers and Panic Spring, have been impossible to get hold of.
