Pierre Moerlen (* 23. Oktober 1952 in Colmar; † 3. Mai 2005 in Straßburg) war ein französischer Schlagzeuger und Komponist. Leben und Wirken. Die erste musikalische Ausbildung erhielt Moerlen 1963–67 am Klavier durch seinen Vater Maurice.
Pierre Moerlen was born in Colmar on 23 October 1952, third of five children. His father was an organist and his mother was a music teacher. All five siblings learned music with their parents and all became musicians. Pierre's younger brother, Benoît Moerlen, is also a percussionist (he also worked with Gong and Mike Oldfield).
Pierre Moerlen was born in Colmar into a very musical family, his father being the resident organist of the Strasbourg cathedral as well as a piano and organ teacher, and his mother a school piano teacher. His three sisters and his brother Benoît are also musicians, although not all play music professionally.
Pierre Moerlen 1952-2005 Pierre Moerlen died unexpectedly in his sleep in the early hours of Tuesday 3rd May 2005, aged 53, in the mountains near Strasbourg. Pierre Moerlen's Gong was an instrumental jazz fusion band led by French drummer Pierre Moerlen which developed as an offshoot of the psychedelic progressive rock band Gong founded and led by Daevid Allen. It was notable for the prominent use of mallet percussion, particularly vibraphone, in a jazz-rock context.
This climactic and joyful 2hr 16min Gong live set was beautifully captured for this Audio and Video recording. This was the last time that Gong played with the full “classic” line-up (minus just Pierre Moerlen on drums, who sadly died the year before).
