Like all woodwinds, flutes are aerophones, producing sound with a vibrating column of air. Unlike woodwind instruments with reeds, a flute produces sound when the player's air flows across an opening. In the Hornbostel–Sachs classification system, flutes are edge-blown aerophones. [1]

3. Feb. 2024 · Anatomy of a Flute. The Flute is basically a tube divided into three sections: the head joint. the body. the foot joint. Like other wind instruments, the pitch of the sound is determined by the length of that tube. In simple terms, the longer the tube the lower the pitch will be.
Acoustic impedance of the flute. The way in which the jet flows into and out of the flute depends upon the acoustic impedance at the embouchure hole, which is why we measure this quantity. Flute players hold the instrument horizontally and blow air across the embouchure hole, which is the small opening at the top of the flute's headjoint.
