Biography. Early life and education. Hurston was the fifth of eight children of John Hurston and Lucy Ann Hurston ( née Potts). All four of her grandparents had been born into slavery. Her father was a Baptist preacher and sharecropper, who later became a carpenter, and her mother was a school teacher.

Kindheit und Jugend
Zora Hurston war das fünfte von insgesamt acht Kindern und kam aus einer traditionsbewussten afro-amerikanischen Gemeinschaft. Als sie drei Jahre alt war, zog ihre Familie nach Eatonville, Florida, wo ihr Vater als Pastor arbeitete und 1897 zum Bürgermeister gewählt wurde. Studium und literarische Erfolge
Da ihr Vater sie nicht mehr unterstützt, arbeitet Hurston ab 1917 als Kellnerin und besucht die Abendschule Morgan Academy, die sie 1918 abschließt. Von 1918 bis 1920 besuchte sie die Howard University in Washington, D.C., wo sie eines der ersten Mitglieder der „Zeta Phi Beta“-Fraternities und Sororitywurde.
