Albany Leon " Barney " Bigard [1] (March 3, 1906 – June 27, 1980) [2] was an American jazz clarinetist known for his 15-year tenure with Duke Ellington. He also played tenor saxophone. Biography. Bigard was born in New Orleans to Creole parents, Alexander and Emanuella Bigard. He had two brothers, Alexander Jr. and Sidney. [3] .
1925 erhielt Bigard dort ein Engagement bei King Oliver, der im Plantation Cafe auftrat. Nach einigen kurzen Zwischenstationen – u. a. in der Band von Luis Russell, die in dem legendären Harlemer Frühlokal „The Nest“ spielte – wechselte er im Januar 1928 in das Orchester von Duke Ellington.
