It is used primarily for football matches, and tournaments such as the UEFA Euro 1984 and 2016, the 1998 FIFA World Cup and the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup. It is also used for rugby union, and was a venue at the 2007 Rugby World Cup.

Stade Geoffroy-Guichard is located toward the north of the city of Saint-Étienne, just over 2 kilometres from the city centre and main rail station. One can walk to the stadium in about half an hour. Alternatively, one can take either tram T1 or T2 from the city centre (Place Jean Jaurès).
Stade Geoffroy-Guichard has been the home of the French Ligue 1 side AS Saint-Étienne since 1931. Though it is a multi-purpose stadium and has been used in high profile events such as the 2007 Rugby World Cup, it is primarily used for football matches and was one of the locations for the 2016 European Championships.
