History of Takoma Park. In 1883, developer Benjamin Franklin (B.F.) Gilbert purchased his first tract of land in Washington, D.C. and Maryland. In building a “sylvan suburb of the National Capitol,” he developed Takoma Park as one of first railroad-accessible suburbs in the D.C. area.
Takoma Park quickly became the central commercial area for farmers, commuters and gentry commuting into Washington, D.C. by train and streetcar. Now it is a vibrant satellite city with a "small town" ambiance and a reputation for post-1960s era counterculture political activism.
