Frank Oz voices and puppeteers Yoda in the 1980 film The Empire Strikes Back, which was the character's first appearance.
Yoda was the Jedi Master of Count Dooku, who ultimately renounced his commitment to the Jedi Order. Over a century later, Yoda took on the human Dooku as his last known Padawan in the era of the Galactic Republic. In 90 BBY, Yoda undertook a visit to Serenno with other Jedi Masters and younglings Sifo Dyas, and Dooku.
While Jedi Master was the highest of the formal ranks of the order, the Jedi High Council would select a Jedi Master who possessed the strongest mind, the greatest leadership qualities and incomparable mastery of the Force and name them Grand Master, the undisputed leader of the order.
In the fictional Star Wars universe, Mace Windu is portrayed as a Jedi Master who sits on the High Council during the final years of the Galactic Republic. He is notable for wielding a unique purple-bladed lightsaber, and is regarded as one of the most powerful Jedi of his time, second only to Yoda.
