7. Juli 2023 · By the age of 11, she was performing as a gospel vocalist at church recitals across the country. At the age of 15, she won an amateur talent contest at Chicago’s Regal Theatre and began performing in nightclubs as a jazz pianist and vocalist.
Dinah Washington, as she herself would readily acknowledge, was called Queen of the Blues, During a show at the London Palladium, she told an audience that purportedly included Queen Elizabeth, “There is but one heaven, one hell, one queen, and your Elizabeth is an imposter.”
Though known later as “Dinah Washington,” she was born Ruth Lee Jones on August 29, 1924, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. As a child, she moved to Chicago and joined the gospel choir at St. Luke’s Baptist Church, playing piano for them while still in elementary school.
