Earl Hines. Earl Kenneth Hines, also known as Earl " Fatha " [nb 1] Hines (December 28, 1903 [nb 2] – April 22, 1983), was an American jazz pianist and bandleader. He was one of the most influential figures in the development of jazz piano and, according to one source, "one of a small number of pianists whose playing shaped the history of jazz".

Earl Hines was one of the most revolutionary piano stylists of the 20th Century, bridging the gap between ragtime and the New Orleans style of Jelly Roll Morton, the stride piano of James P. Johnson and Fats Waller and the modern sounds of Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Bill Evans and others.
Biography. Once called “the first modern jazz pianist,” Earl Hines differed from the stride pianists of the 1920s by breaking up the stride rhythms with unusual accents from his left hand.
