Alabama was established as a separate territory in 1817 and became a state in 1819. By 1820 Alabama’s population was more than 125,000, including about 500 free Blacks . By 1830 there were 300,000 residents, nearly one-fifth of them enslaved, and cotton was the principal cash crop.

The Alabama Territory was created in 1817, and statehood was granted in 1819. Alabama seceded from the Union in 1861, becoming part of the Confederacy; it was readmitted in 1868. Efforts during Reconstruction to include blacks in government failed, and Alabama remained segregationist until the 1960s.
Originally home to many native tribes, present-day Alabama was a Spanish territory beginning in the sixteenth century until the French acquired it in the early eighteenth century. The British won the territory in 1763 until losing it in the American Revolutionary War. Spain held Mobile as part of Spanish West Florida until 1813.
