Anything with 'wave' in the genre title usually has electronic synth-heavy elements. Like New Wave (Kim Wilde, Berlin, A Flock of Seagulls, etc) , Vaporwave, Synthwave, etc. So if you hear a lot of synths you're listening to Dark Wave.
Dark wave (also typeset as darkwave) is a music genre that emerged from the new wave and post-punk movement of the late 1970s. Dark wave compositions are largely based on minor key tonality and introspective lyrics and have been perceived as being dark, romantic and bleak, with an undertone of sorrow.

A lot of post 2010 era post punk revival music is now considered to be darkwave. Why is this confusing? Because prior to recent years it would not have been considered darkwave at all. A couple of bands I think are strong examples of this are Drab Majesty and Boy Harsher.
