Im Jahre 1835 verfasste der russische Schriftsteller Nikolai Wassiljewitsch Gogol seine fantastische Erzählung, die auf den Namen Wij, auch Vij hört. Der hier vorliegende Film VIY basiert genau auf dieser Geschichte und ist von den Ereignissen her deckungsgleich mit Gogols Erzählung.
