Claude Allègre (French pronunciation: [klodaˈlɛɡʁ]; born 31 March 1937) is a French politician and scientist.
Claude Allègre was appointed full professor at the University of Paris VII in 1970 and became director of the IPGP. The work of the team of researchers led by Claude Allègre focused mainly on geochemical issues based on the study of trace elements and isotopes.
PARIS— When geochemist Claude Allègre was appointed France's minister of national education, research, and technology in June 1997, French scientists thought they at long last had a colleague in their corner. Now many researchers are not so sure.
Claude Allègre is Professor Emeritus of Earth Sciences, Université de Paris, and a 1986 recipient of the Crafoord Prize awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
Claude Allègre is a geochemist whose innovative radioactive dating techniques have given us a better understanding of the Earth’s rocky outer layers — its mantle and crust. He pioneered the use of the decay of rhenium-187 to osmium, now widely used to date the mantle underneath continents.
