Ralph Howard Fowler was an English physicist and astronomer. He also worked on thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. View two larger pictures. Biography. Ralph Howard Fowler was the eldest son of Howard Fowler and Frances Eva (the daughter of George Dewhurst the Manchester cotton merchant).
Fowler, became an even more distinguished golfer than Ralph himself, winning the English Ladies' Close Championship for golf in 1925 at Westward Ho, and being runner-up in 1924; she played for England, 1921-1928.
R.H. Fowler was, in and between the two world wars, a pre-eminent figure in mathematical physics, both nationally and internationally. He influenced nearly everyone then active in the field and was very well known in his own time.
Sir Ralph Fowler, Plummer Professor of Mathematical Physics at Cambridge, died on 28 July 1944, at the age of fifty-five, as the result of an illness which first attacked him in 1938.
