The concept of the witch. The idea of witchcraft and sorcery certainly existed in 1300 (as indeed it had for centuries) but it was far more loosely defined. It was not particularly associated with devil worship. Concepts such as witch marks and black sabbaths were unheard of.

The Strappado torture device was a commonly used device during medieval times which was used to extract information out of supposed heretics, witches, and other victims. It was a relatively simple device in which the victim was hung by his or her hands tied to a rope.
How did these fears of magical practitioners morph into the witch trials of the fifteenth century? Nider’s Formicarius did not cause the witch craze but his text-enabled witch hunts in two ways: 1.) It detailed the schematic of organized witchcraft. 2.) Nider located this sect within the Christian community.
In Homer’s Odyssey (c.800 BC), Circe – who turns men into animals – is described as a witch, and Plutarch refers to witchcraft in his treatise On Superstition (c.AD 100). Illicit magic features heavily in Roman law statutes, some of which are passed down to the Christian world.
When a victim was placed inside the brazen bull, he or she was roasted to death by a fire lit underneath it. A system of tubes made the victim's screams sound like an infuriated bull, and also made the bull's muzzle snort smoke. In the Middle Ages it was used in Central Europe.
